Centurion Valens and the Empress of Death James Mace 9781475049305 Books
This is the author's first foray into short stories and after reading this one perhaps the start of many more. Centurion Valens, the main character of this story, was first introduced to the reading public in the novel `Soldier of Rome: The Legionary' and subsequently in the following three novels that made up James Mace's Artorian Chronicles. For first time readers of this author this novella is a good introduction to some of the characters in those four novels and also into the authors writing style. To those familiar with his work it's a refresher of past events and some insights into forthcoming events in novels yet to be published.
This novella is relaxed reading and could easily be read in a few hours. It is set in 44 AD, following the conquest of Britannia, when Centurion Valens returns to Rome in Triumph. He and chosen members of the army are personally received and rewarded by the emperor Claudius Drusus Caesar. The story certainly captures the main character's deviant sexual preferences and naivety.
Be mindful that the story has a couple of very raunchy scenes. These instances allow the reader to gain an insight into certain sexual inclinations of Centurion Valens that lead him into a dangerous liaison with the conniving and rather debauched practices of Empress Valeria Messalina; Claudius' third wife.

Centurion Valens and the Empress of Death James Mace 9781475049305 Books Reviews
A very good story by James Mace but I am sure more could have been included to this short book. I enjoyed it very much.

He brings to life the everyday lives and the extraordinary days of yesteryear. James Mace is my newest favorite author.
James Mace has scored a home run with this novella. Put it on your "must read" list. Not only is it a good story, but we get a glimpse of what's in store for our friends 20 years into the future. I hope that James has time for a couple more of these fabulous short runs, plus more full novels.
The men in the legions fought hard to protect Rome and her conquered territories. In doing so, the average citizen felt safe and their efforts built up the treasury coffers. The nobility led a pampered life where intrigue and dishonesty were common. Messalina, was but one example of the depravity of some in power.
I've enjoyed Mace's previous novels about life in the legions. This novella is an excursion about intrigue in the emperor's court and is thus to me less interesting. Given the genre shift, it's not a bad piece of work tho "I Claudius" it's not. Had I the choice to make again, I would pass on this one.
I enjoyed this story primarily because it gave good insight to the Valens and Svetlana characters from the Artorious series. Even Erin makes an appearance. Again the author does a good job of presenting main characters as very human foibles and all. This short story could stand on its own but works best as a companion piece to the Artorious series.
Not the most taxing read I've ever had. Lecherous Centurion Valens returns to Rome looking for some debauchery and encounters the insatiable Empress Messalina. Sounds like a porn novel. However, the empress then blackmails Valens into killing her enemies or she will denounces him to the emperor Claudius. How does Valens escape? It won't take you long to find out. It's a short read......
